Towing FAQ

What hitch class do I need?

Class 3 (up to about 8,000 pounds, 2 inch receiver) covers most half-ton trucks and SUVs pulling boats, utility and small camper trailers. Class 4 and Class 5 (10,000 to 20,000 pounds) are for three-quarter and one-ton trucks and large trailers. Your truck's tow rating is the real limit, not the hitch.

Fifth wheel or gooseneck?

Fifth wheel hitches are the standard for RV campers and give a smoother ride. Gooseneck hitches use a ball in the bed and are common for livestock, flatbed and equipment trailers. Many trucks have factory puck systems that accept either with the right adapter.

What is a weight distribution hitch and do I need one?

A weight distribution hitch uses spring bars to shift some of the trailer's tongue weight to the truck's front axle and the trailer's axles, so the rig sits level and steers normally. Most manufacturers recommend one once tongue weight passes about 500 pounds or the trailer is over half the truck's weight.

How do I pick the right ball mount drop or rise?

Measure from the ground to the top of the receiver opening on the truck, then from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler with the trailer level. The difference is the drop (or rise) you need.

Does a receiver hitch require drilling?

Most receiver hitches bolt to existing frame holes with no drilling. Some older vehicles and a few SUVs require drilling; the product page lists the install method and time.

Do I need a wiring harness?

If your truck does not have a factory trailer connector, yes. Plug-in harnesses use the factory tail light connectors on most trucks; 7-way connectors are needed for trailers with electric brakes.

How does shipping work on hitches?

Orders of $300 or more ship free to the lower 48; smaller orders pay shipping calculated at checkout.99. Fifth wheel and gooseneck hitches ship by freight and get a discounted freight rate at checkout. Freight and oversize items are not included in free shipping. Inspect the shipment before signing and report any damage within 48 hours.

Can I return towing gear?

New, uninstalled items in original packaging can be returned within 30 days of delivery with a return authorization. A 20% restocking fee applies and the customer pays return shipping. Damaged, defective or incorrect items are replaced at no cost when reported within 48 hours.
